Dexterous Mechanical Hand : TP-HAND Robotic hand systems are used in a wide range of applications, from performing routine and automated tasks in production lines, to manipulating objects in hazardous environments, to assisting with delicate and complicated surgical procedures. The increasing use of robotic hand systems in these and other applications has made a significant impact on industries such as manufacturing, defence, environmental, medical, entertainment, edutainment and even space. However, the quest to develop a system that can entirely replace the capabilities of the human hand continues, in order to meet the demands of present and future applications requiring even greater accuracy, precision, flexibility and dexterity. At Temasek Polytechnic, we have developed a robotic hand system using axially-compact gear assemblies. Our multi-fingered system is capable of pitching (up and down) up to 75 degrees and yawing (left and right) up to 15 degrees on each finger, enabling it to perform movements such as grasping, tipping, hooking, snapping and pinching, among other movements. Torque for each joint is around 0.5Nm. This mechanism design is Patented (PCT/SG00/00060).
